Do Retinoid Gels Help Acne? The Good, the Bad the Ugly – My Story

25 Nov

My name is Declan; I had a gruelling ten year long battle with acne before finding a method that worked 100%. Im not acne free and living life to the full. Now I will share my experiences with the retinoid gel differin (adapeline) 0.1%.

Differin contains the active ingredient adapeline (a topical retinoid), which is a deep exfoliation product. Exfoliation helps acne by removing excess dirt, oil and other tiny objects which may contain bacteria or block pores. I used Differin for 6 months during my early 20s, to some extent it did work, but eventually the negatives outweighed the positives.

The Good: Unlike other topical gels, Differin works under the skins surface towards the root of the problem, this means its more than just a temporary effect. My first week of using differin produced no results; in fact my acne seemed to be getting worse. Thereafter the product seemed to be working. My skin actually felt clear over a period of time; in fact medical studies have shown that Differin can reduce lesions by up to a third in people with moderate acne.

The Bad: Any harsh skin product is going to produce side effects. The concentrations of adapeline in differin are either 0.1% or 0.3%, so its fair to say that adapeline is very strong! In my first 2 weeks I would have slight burning sensations across the applied areas on the skin. These sensations would gradually get worse as the day went on, plus if any exercise was carried out the sweat would cause further irritation and itchiness. Leading on to the ugly…

The Ugly: Throughout my use of Differin 0.1% I would notice intense peeling the morning after applying the product; this would carry on throughout the day. My first 2 weeks were the worst, not only would I notice the peeling, my skin would have a red tinge to it, this was especially noticeable in direct sunlight.

To be honest, at the time of using differin I would accept the fact that in order for something to have an effect on my acne, I would have to deal with bad side effects (in this case: peeling, red patches burning sensations). But now I can help… Ive had the displeasure of spending years of my life trying to find a solution; it was only after I took the advice of medical students at my university that I became free of acne – with no side effects.

4 Things You Should Know About Acne

25 Nov

Author: Mayo Underwoodbr
Source: ezinearticles.combr
br
Acne vulgaris is the most common form of acne in teenagers. It occurs when the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (quite a mouthful) comes into contact with the sebaceous glands at the base of tiny hairs. The glands surround hair follicles.

Skin, the largest organ, is very active absorbing energy and constantly renewing itself to keep you healthy. Old dead skin cells and cellular waste have to be removed from the good skin (like taking out the garbage). When this garbage-removal is blocked, the area gets inflamed and infected, which is whats referred to as common acne

There are four main ways to control this

1. Keeping the skin clean

Skin pores are keptopen when all dead skin cells and by-products of skin activity are easily and cleanly removed from the site of the infection. Good cleaning techniques normally accomplish this – the reason everybody tells you how to effectively wash your face.

If you dont clean your skin well, then all the other treatments in this list are a waste of time.

2. Killing off the bacteria

Apply topical gels or creams made to kill bacteria to the infected areas. There are alsomedications to swallow that accomplish similar things in severe cases; see your family doctor.

There are two problems with the above solutions.

a.) Research is finding a buildup of chemicals on the skin can cause acne. Most skin care and acne-treatment products (except for those that are certified organic) contain harmful chemicals.

b.) There are now drug-resistant strains of P. acnes so many treatments either do not kill the bacteria or merely knock it back temporarily..

Neither the problem of hormones or that of the malfunction in skin glands is solved by killing off the bacteria. Its only a temporary fix.

3. Anti-inflammatory Agents

These include creams and doctors prescriptions that do much the same as the bacterial killers, except their function is to reduce skin swelling and ease inflammation (redness). They are temporary repairs that act in the short term, but not permanently.

4. Hormonal manipulation

In severe cases, your physician can work with you to adjust hormones and create a body environment less likely to be a host for the bacteria. This is NOT something you want to be doing yourself, but is truly a medically-supervised activity.

Home Remedies For Blackheads – The Best Home Remedies Uncovered

23 Nov

Author: Andy Johnston
Source: ezinearticles.com

There are several helpful home remedies for blackheads which are ultra-inexpensive to implement. You do not have to spend a huge fortune on over-the-counter treatment methods or doctor visits to get rid of blackheads forever. All you need to do is give a few of these safe, easy to use remedies a try.

Facial Steam

Bring water to a boil in a pan; once you have the water hot enough so that you have generated steam, you can put the hot water in a large bowl on a table. Using a dry towel, you can drape the towel over your head and steam your face: do not get overzealous about steaming though. If you have trouble breathing or you feel too hot, stop using the steam. This action will cause the pores to open up where you have blackheads so that they can be more readily removed when you cleanse your face.

Warm Cloth Application

Run a warm cloth underneath some hot water (as hot as you can tolerate without being burned). Wring out the cloth and sit in a chair as you drape the cloth over your face for five minutes. This is another all-natural technique for forcing your pores to open up so that blackhead removal is more possible during facial cleansing. After you have finished, cleanse your face with a mild cleanser.

Homemade Face Scrub

Make yourself a homemade face scrub by grinding up a few orange peels and mixing it with one teaspoon of Epsom salt and a quarter-cup of hot water. Using cotton balls put this mix on the areas of your face where blackheads have formed. Give the mixture a few minutes to dry and follow up with a gentle facial cleansing.

Acne – Top Seven Myths About Pimples

23 Nov

Author: Ken Black
Source: isnare.com

We all know how annoying and embarrassing acne can be, not to mention how hard it is to get rid of for most people. It affects millions of folks worldwide, especially those under the age of thirty, but even adults are affected. But, why does it keep coming back? Well, do not believe everything you read or hear.

Here are the top seven Acne Myths :

1. Popping pimples gets rid of them – no, sorry, that just does not work. When you pop a zit the germs and bacteria that cause it go under your skin. This can cause pain, redness, swelling and even infection. If you keep doing it, another possible problem that can develop is scaring which can be permanent.

2. Chocolate and fried foods cause pimples – although this sounds logical, it is also not true, which is a good thing if you love eating chocolate and the occassional hamburger or fried chicken. No studies have proven this and it may be only a psychological belief that this is true. Of course, it sure will not help if you have greasy hands and wipe them on your face while eating – that will not help.

3. Stress causes blemishes – not true either. Stress is a part of life, more now than likely anytime in history, and certainly a growing up and for that matter, all your life. Do you worry about tests at school, or your performance in sports events, or problems at home ? Will these things cause your body to explode with skin flare-ups ? No, fortunately, this is a falsehood – a good thing too, or we would all be visiting a dermatologist on a regular basis.

4. Exposure to the Sun will eliminate acne – I have to tell you that I too believed this one. The sun will damage your skin and cause it to become dry, burned and irritated and can even put you at risk for skin cancer later in life. This myth came about mostly because as your skin gets a tan, it becomes darker and pimples and zits are less noticeable.

If you need to be out in the sun, use sunscreen with an SPF factor of at least 30 and do not forget to wear sunglasses and a hat.

5. Washing your face as much as possible will clear your skin – not a bad idea to wash your face and the rest of your body on a regular basis too (your family, friends and co-workers will be happy you did – just kidding of course) too, but, this will not by itself do the trick.

Washing your face will remove excess oil, dirt and even dead skin cells, but over-doing it or rough scrubbing will irritate the skin and dry it out, which makes things worse. Wash your face once or twice a day using a mild cleanser and dry your skin with a soft towel.

6. Do not wear makeup – using noncomedogenic (will not clog pores and does not contain perfumes) makeup products in moderation should not be a problem.

These products will not clog pores and some even contain contain acne fighting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

7. Using more medicine is better – too much acne medicine can irritate and cause your skin to turn red, and may dry it out. Using more over the counter or prescription medication than is recommended will cause more harm than taking none at all. Also, drugs do have side effects like nausea, headaches, and other unpleasant reactions if you overdo it. Best to stick with the directions provided.

As these seven myths have indicated, many things you might have imagined causing acne, actually do not. To get clearer skin, eat a well balanced diet and exercise. If you need to take something to help you clear your skin faster, talk to your physician or try one of the safer over the counter products first.

Acne Scars, How to Get Rid of Them

22 Nov

Author: Mercy Maranga
Source: ezinearticles.com

Acne scars may make you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed around people. A scar normally forms at the site of an injury. In this case, the injury is a as a result of the body’s inflammatory response to the sebum bacteria and the dead cells in the sebaceous follicle.

Scars as a result of acne can be classified into two. There are those scars that are caused by increased tissue formation, they are referred to as keloids and are associated with excessive amounts of collagen. There are also those that are caused by loss of tissue. Excessive production of collagen is a response by the skin cells to an injury. The excess collagen is piled in fibrous masses leading to a scar. Acne scars that are caused by loss of tissue include ice-pick scars and depressed fibrotic scars. Others are atrophic macules and follicular macular atrophy.

You can get rid of these scars through a number of treatment methods. One such treatment is through collagen injection. This involves injecting collagen under the skin that helps to stretch and fill out certain types of scars. Autologous fat transfer involves taking fat from one part of your body and injecting it under the skin to elevate a depressed scar. Dermabrasion is considered the most effective treatment method and it involves the use of an anesthetic and a high-speed brush to remove surface skin and change the shape of the scar.

Microdermabrasion is a form of dermabrasion and instead of using a high-speed brush, aluminum oxide crystals passing through a vacuum tube are used to remove surface skin. Other treatment methods for acne scars include laser treatment, skin surgery and skin grafting.

How To Deal With It – Adult Acne

21 Nov

Author: Subasree
Source: articledashboard.com

Acne is common in teenage and during pregnancy, when it occurs on adults it is a very stressful situation for them, as the society does not approve acne or adults. Some adults feel so embarrassed that they want to hide acne from other people’s sight. Studies have shown some growing evidence on acne, that it can be a hereditary disease too apart from occurring due to hormonal imbalances. It is due to oil production and mismanagement of dead cells exfoliation. Acne lesions in adults are normally seen on the face, but might also occur anytime on the chest, neck, back, scalp, legs, upper arms and even shoulders. Adult acne is very persistent when compared to teen acne, as acne seen in teens subsides over time when the hormones get adjusted. Another major drawback of adult acne is that it leads to permanent scarring.

Key Factors That Contribute to adult acne :

Hormones are considered as the main culprit and mainly cause skin eruptions or outbreak of acne. But, has anyone thought about the organs that produce the hormones? The actual fact is that the kidneys, liver and skin are the important organs involved in eliminating impurities and waste particles from the body, if anyone of the organs does not work properly and does not eliminate waste out the body, it might result in acne in adults. Acne or the skin eruption is the first symptom of failure these organs are facing. To facilitate the elimination of waste from body water is very important, when water is taken in good quantities the bowels are cleared and the blood too gets rid of its toxic elements. If water content decreases the skin might not do its function of eliminating wastes, or the lungs might not be able to oxygenize the blood due to the impurities of air is breathed and retained in it. Hence, the factors for acne may be air, food, emotional stress, water etc.

Natural adult acne treatments:

The wastes from the body should be eliminated properly to facilitate it the person should be exposed to pure air, water, natural food habits and, foods rich in antioxidants. A natural face wash made up of clean, warm water with lemon juice can be used to pamper the skin. The lemon has the ability to reduce oil from the skin, hence minimizing acne in adults. Fiber rich food helps in the removal of toxins and wastes from the body by facilitating the bowel movements. Also when using cosmetic products, care needs to be taken not to use oil-based cosmetics.

Homemade Acne Treatments – Are They Really Working?

20 Nov

Author: Oliver Turner

Treatments for acne can begin from your kitchen. There are several vegetables and fruits which can be used to cure acne.

Most people are not convinced about the effectiveness of the homemade acne treatments. But if you check the ingredients of popular medicines for acne you will find that most of them consist of substances found in common vegetables and fruits. Acne is the result of the lack of vital vitamins like Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Pantothenic Acid. Deficiency in these vitamins leads to the growth of bacteria that clogs the skin oil. This in turn leads to acne. Most of the medicines try to replenish the essential vitamins, which can be easily got by filling your diet with vegetable and fruits containing those vitamins.

Keeping the skin clean is an important part in the acne treatment. Cleaning the skin with lemon is an effective acne treatment. Lemon is used for several purposes mainly due to the presence of citric acid. The citric acid has several essential properties required to kill the harmful bacteria. Rub lemon on your skin before going to sleep and you will find a clear skin in the morning. Similarly, you can get rid of acne scars by applying tomato slice. Applying garlic on the spots is another effective homemade acne treatment. Mint juice also can remove skin lesions and scars.

Other homemade acne treatments include applying the paste of orange peels. This paste cleans the skin and fights harmful bacteria. Application of raw papayas can also bring relief to acne. Daily application of tea tree oil, coconut oil, lavender oil and jojoba oil before bathing for an hour can reduce acne. Including large amount of fruits and vegetables in the diet and drinking lot of water are part of acne treatment.

The success of homemade acne treatments depends on the dedication shown by the person. Simply rubbing lemon or tomato for a day will not cure acne. All home made acne treatments should be strictly followed for over a period of time.

Acne Solutions That Are Guaranteed To Work

Acne is a condition that affects 4 out of 5 people at some time in their life. Some get it a lot worse than others and it can result in permanent physical and emotional scars. Bad acne to a teenager could be the same as wearing coke bottle glasses for really bad eyes – non acceptance and lack of a social life. It also greatly affects millions of adults. We see numerous infomercials on everything from Proactiv to Murad facial cleansing products.

The problem is that most of their claims are false and these products do not work. Why do you think that you can’t buy them in physical stores and even more importantly, why doesn’t your dermatologist or doctor prescribe Proactiv or Murad? Why don’t they stock them in their offices and make them a part of their anti acne regimen? Because they are all multi million dollar advertising hype and do not work any more so than a sugar pill or placebo. Here is what really does work and is actually used by dermatologists in their offices (unlike Proactiv and Murad).

The first thing one with acne needs to do is gently wash and clean their face. Proactiv makes benzoyl peroxide a mian stay of their active ingredients and it may kill some of the acne causing bacteria, but it greatly irritates the skin and actually worsens or exacerbates the condition. Why do you think everyone sells their ineffective Proactiv solutions on Ebay? So they can recoup some of the money they have lost with this ineffective product. Instead of using Proactiv or Murad, dermatologists recommend a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil which will thoroughly cleanse your skin and not irritate it. Unlike Proactiv and Murad, Cetaphil is actually used in almost every dermatologists office and is a part of their acne treating and skin care regimen.

Another treatment that is actually used by dermatologists is the TCA peel (or trichloroacetic acid skin peel). This is a medium depth skin peel and will remove the top few layers of skin and result in newer and more youthful skin. The TCA peel will also reach deep inside of every pore unclogging them of sebaceous gland oil and bacteria. The TCA peel will then neutralize the skin and return it to its natural pH making it less prone to infection by acne causing bacteria. The TCA peel has been found to be so effective in treating acne and numerous skin conditions including wrinkles, sun damage, freckles and even pre cancerous legions and growths that it has actually been approved by the FDA for these purposes. The TCA peel is used and offered in almost every dermatologist and plastic surgeons office and has some off shoots like the Obagi Blue Peel (made famous by Dr. Obagi).

The main ingredient in the famous Obagi Blue Peel is still the same as in the TCA peel (TCA). The difference is that the Obagi Blue Peel has a staining or dye that is blue or green in color and it is applied as a paste. The idea behind this is it makes it easier to identify where it has and hasn’t been applied. The negatives are that you look like a frog until it heals, and the Obagi Blue Peel tends to be weaker than a pure TCA peel and thusly requires several more treatments for the same results. The pure TCA peel is used in more and more doctors offices as it offers patients more results quicker. The pure TCA peel also has longer lasting results.

Lastly, one needs to properly moisturize their skin. A non comodogenic (non pimple causing) moisturizer with a relatively high spf (sun protection factor rating where 40 is highest and 1 or 0 is lowest) to block out harmful UV rays. Regardless of if you are outside on a sunny day or a cloudy day, UV rays are aging your skin and can also bring on precancerous conditions. Use UV protection. If you can’t find it in a moisturizer that you like, then by all means use protective sun lotion with a high spf (make sure it is waterproof, non comodogenic and easy to apply). If you don’t think you need it or that you won’t get cancer, just take a visit to your local hospitals oncology department. The patients there will tell you they thought it wouldn’t matter also.

There you have it a three part acne treatment system that is guaranteed to work unlike misleading TV advertisements and infomercials hawked by highly paid stars like Jessica Simpson and others. Use what really works and is actually used by dermatologists in their offices on their actual patients.

Acne Treatment And Pih

20 Nov

Author: CD Mohatta
Source: isnare.com

When acne resolves, it leaves a mark on the skin. That is most commonly PIH. PIH is Post Inflammatory hyper- pigmentation. This color is due to natural healing process of the body. It fades in about a year. The color of PIH depends upon the individuals skin color. PIH is not a scar. A true scar does not fade away, but PIFH fades away. How to hasten the fading away of the PIH? Let us find out about the acne treatment that hastens this process.

Acne Treatment -

Any medication or product that multiplies the skin cell turnover will remove the darkened skin in shorter time. Molecules such as Retinoids increase the turnover of skin cells. They are therefore useful in resolving PIH fast. Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A. Adaplene, Tazarotene and Tretinoin are common retinoids. Retinoids can cause dryness of the skin and may also cause itching in some individuals. Sun protection is a must while using retinoids because they make the skin more sensitive to sun.

AHAs and PIH-

Alpha Hydroxy Acids are very useful in skin rejuvenation. AHAs remove the dead skin cells on the skin. They loosen the bonds between the skin cells and remove the dead cells. This increases the speed of growth of new cells. AHAs are also called as fruit acids. They are also found in milk. Now days, AHAs are chemically synthesized. Glycolic is one of the common AHAs and many formulations are available with Glycolic Acid. Use of these formulations will remove the dead skin cells and help resolve the PIH fast.

Sun exposure-

PIH have higher density of melanin the skin color pigment. The sunrays selectively darken such spots more than the other skin. It is therefore important to protect the darkened spots from sun. A good sunscreen must be used till the color fades away.

Bleaches- Skin bleaches such as Hydroquinone, Azelaic Acid are very useful in removing the excess skin color. They should be used carefully otherwise they may lighten the spot compared to the surrounding skin.

Acne – Basic Things You Need To Know

18 Nov

Author: Paton Jackson -
Source: articledashboard.com

For those that are dealing with acne, having the necessary knowledge about where it comes from and how to treat it is the first step in solving this very difficult and often scarring condition. It is not easy to find a way to work through acne when you do not know if a product will work how it will work or what is causing the acne on your face. In fact, it is plain old frustrating. Yet, the good news is that you can learn and you can succeed with acne treatments.

What Causes Acne?

The first thing to understand is what is causing your acne. Now, some people are more prone to it than others and this may or may not be linked to family genes and just environmental issues. But, what causes these little infections on your face happens for a very specific reason. Acne is caused by bacteria that are attracted to your face. They are attracted to it because your skin is oily and warm. And, there are dead skin cell to feed on. They get onto your face, into your pores and make themselves at home. Your skin becomes irritated and there comes that frightening pimple.

What Will Make It Go Away?

There are several acne treatment options for you. First, acne control can come from natural acne treatments such as eating a well balanced diet and taking supplements that are geared towards acne treatment. These will include a good assortment of vitamins and minerals that are known to help with acne control.

Next, you can move on to treating the infections in your skin. To do this, your doctor may provide you with antibiotics. Or, there are also natural skin care treatments that can help as well. In either case, the bacteria that are there need to be destroyed. Finally, you can work on exfoliating your skin to remove all those dead cells that the acne is feeding off of.

There are many acne products that can help with these steps. The goal is to understand why it is happening to you then you can gear your acne treatment right at it and see results. Remember, though, it took time for your face to become in this condition and it will take time for the acne to heal fully as well.
