The chemical peel is an aspect in an anti-aging regimen that many people are starting to add to their portfolio of skin care products and treatments. I was fortunate enough to catch up with someone who works for the famous Dr. A.F. Kalil, founder of Kalil Medical and the Vitality Institute in South Beach, Miami, and find out more about this popular procedure.

The chemical peel is done by applying a formulated peel to your face with a brush. Once the chemicals set into the face, the peel goes to work on the skin, removing dead skin cells and making way for new, fresh, rejuvenated skin below. The peel works to remove dead skin cells from the top layer of the face and make way for new skin while also removing sun damage. Ok, that all sounds great, but how does the process go and what happens after the fact?

Basically, you are without your normal skin care products for a week after the peel. That means that none of the following products can be used at any point in time.

* wrinkle cream
* eye cream
* bleaching cream
* eye serum
* anything else that is topically applied to the treated area.

For about six-seven days after the process, the skin starts to flake off in large sheets. During this time, there is no discomfort to the skin, although people do agree that it feels tight, almost like a severe sunburn. Sunburn does not feel comfy, as I’ve had it quite a bit with my fair skin. Sometimes people will complain that the dead skin cells are gross, but of course this is a trade off that people have to accept when they do the procedure.

The peel in the case I examined lasted 6 days. That is, on day seven, the client did not have any more flaking of the skin or long, hanging skin sheets that bothered the people around him. Sometimes people pick at these and tear them off, but it’s best to let them flake off naturally. Of course, moisturizer helps this process and this is the only skin care product that can be applied post-peel.

So, now that I observed a peel, I caught up with the famous Dr. Kalil himself and asked what can be done to maintain such a great procedure. There are several things you can do to enhance the chemical peel, such as:

* Use sunblock to stave off any future sun damage.
* Apply moisturizer on a more consistent basis.
* Use an eye cream at all times to block out the harmful elements that can damage the under eye area.

Basically a chemical peel can make you look much younger while getting rid of sun damage and even acne. However, the steps you take after the process are the most important. If you don’t pay attention to what is going on with your skin, and take steps to protect it after the procedure, you may as well go right back and get another one.
